One man in particular is responsible for the memorial’s existence. Lieutenant Colonel Tom Nangle, the Regiment’s Roman Catholic Priest, negotiated with 250 French landowners in order to buy this site for our Canadian island. He also chose the caribou – the Regiment’s emblem – as the winning design for the memorial – one of sixteen plans submitted to the Government of Newfoundland.
