The foundations of the memorial are 19 feet thick due to wartime tunneling underneath the structure. Its rich red bricks – Accrington bricks made in Lancashire, England – are known for their strength and have been used in famous buildings and towers around the world, including the Empire State Building and the Blackpool Tower.
